Sacramento Train Museum trip
Last weekend we took a trip to the California State Train Museum in Sacramento with some friends. Ted, Jen, Claire, Caley, Sonya, Lex and Logan joined Shelly, Lane and I for a weekend excursion that was full of trains…
We took the Amtrak train from Jack London Square in Oakland to Sacramento (about two hours), and then walked a block to our hotel, the Vagabond Inn. After dropping off our stuff, we walked another block to the train museum, where we spent the afternoon. Annie and John drove over and went through the museum with us, it was Annie’s first time there. Actually, I think that Ted and I were the only ones who had been there previously.
Before heading back to the hotel for nap time, we all ate lunch at Fat City. They had some of the best Tomato Basil soup that I have ever had the pleasure of devouring!
While the kids napped, we killed time. Shelly and Sonya went out and explored some, and then Caley, Ted and myself got coffee and found what might have been the world’s smallest comic book store. We had plans to explore Old Town Sac, but it turned out that most of the stores were closing at 4-5 pm that day. The fact that it was pouring rain outside wasn’t helping either.
Everyone went to dinner at La Terraza. The food seemed okay at the time, and dessert was pretty good, but while it might just be coincidence, everyone but Shelly ended up being sick at some point afterwards…
On our way back to the hotel, we found a candy store that was still open, and ate a candy apple.
Yum.
The rest of the evening was a bunch of laughing and scrabble. The kids all played in our room, while some of the adults tried to play a game of travel scrabble. Ted got a video of me tackling (blind siding) Shelly…
Before heading to the train station, we ate breakfast at Denny’s, but Caley ended up getting pretty ill (he didn’t feel better until well into the evening from what I understand). As we walked the block back to the Amtrak station, the clouds opened up and we got rained on pretty good, but the wind was far worse. At least Lane was laughing the whole time that I was running with him in the stroller — trying to get inside the train station.
The train museum was fun, but I think that the time on the Amtrak train was the most fun. Lane loved watching the scenery the whole trip up there, and then ignored it the whole way home. Shelly found the train ride to be quite relaxing, so perhaps we have found a new way for us to travel…
You can see all of our photos from the trip here. Caley’s are here, and Ted’s are here. Sonya took a ton of photos, but they are nowhere to be found as of yet (hint, hint).

It really was good times man. We should think about making it a regular/annual thing and invite more families next time! (Zillaclan, I’m looking in your direction!)
